A new form of concrete, stronger and with a lower carbon footprint, has been created by researchers utilizing some of the waste products of biofuel production. Concrete is an extremely widely-used material, and because of this has a rather significant carbon footprint, accounting for between 3-8% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The development of a concrete with a much lower carbon footprint could be significant.

Some good news for embattled commuters in Utah County: The project to rebuild Interstate 15 there is now officially halfway complete — and on schedule to be finished in December 2012.
The Utah Department of Transportation said the project reached that milestone on Monday. It began construction in April 2010.

Make way for road work

No street closures are anticipated as two months of road construction begins in Sonoma.Two street improvement projects will include new corner curb ramps, storm drainage improvements, asphalt paving and striping. Both should be complete by mid-October.
One of the projects will occur on France Street from Broadway to Fourth Street East, Leveroni from the bike path to Broadway, and Fifth Street West from West MacArthur to Harrington. No road closures are anticipated other than a temporary detour on France Street during the storm drain phase of the project.

This is probably the first time you'll read an article about a pavement maintenance contractor who projects to reach $1 billion in sales in 10 years. That's right, billion. Rabine Group, an umbrella organization for nine companies - six directly related to paving and pavement maintenance - has set $1 billion as its 2021 target, and based on recent growth and plans already underway, CEO Gary Rabine says it's a very reachable goal.

Microsurfacing will require lane closures in Kent County

As part of DelDOT’s pavement and rehabilitation program, each year a number of roads are selected for a process called microsurfacing. The contractor, Asphalt Paving Systems Inc., will be placing notices on the doors of the affected residences and businesses to advise them of the dates of lane closures.
The work will begin on Monday, June 13 and end on Friday, July 15, pending weather. Lane closures will occur from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The following roads will be impacted in Kent County:

Area and Volume Calculator - quickly calculates plan area and volume of material based on a pavement or subbase/subgrade layer's thickness, width, and length.
Concrete Mixture Proportioner - provides a method of proportioning a concrete mixture using the absolute volume method in substantial conformance with ACI 211.1-91, "Standard Practice for Selecting Proportions for Normal, Heavyweight and Mass Concrete."
Maximum Joint Space Calculator - calculates joint spacing in jointed plain (unreinforced) concrete pavement.
Staking Interval Calculator - calculates the rate of change of a vertical curve and, based on this value, provides maximum staking interval recommendations....

On April 30th Rabine Paving participated in the 2011 Pavement Seminar. This seminar welcomed over 100 local engineers, city & municipal officials, and DOT personnel for this year’s program. Topics presented in this year’s ½ day program were “New Tends in Hot Mix Asphalt”, “Hot-in-Place Recycling”, “Asphalt Preservation”, “Traffic Calming”, and Advancements in Concrete Pavement Technology”. Scott Haislip from Rabine Paving presentation focused on concrete overlays and pervious concrete pavement applications.

Concrete pavement research for the state of Iowa is accomplished through research programs run by the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) Research and Technology Bureau, and guided by the Iowa Highway Research Board (IHRB). Pavement research is conducted by in-house efforts at the DOT, and through various partnerships.

Astec Industries Reports First Quarter Earnings CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., April 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Astec Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASTE) today reported results for their first quarter ended March 31, 2011.
Revenues for the first quarter of 2011 were $230.2 million compared with $193.5 million for the first quarter of 2010 for a 19.0% increase. The Rabine Group recently hosted an educational seminar attended by Property Managers at NAI Hiffman. The event took place last April 19, 2011 in Schaumburg, Illinois. Rabine Paving’s Ryan Laughlin and UltraLot Paving Systems’ Scott Haislip, two of the company’s most experienced engineers, presented information on the benefits of asphalt and concrete paving. During the Q&A Session, one of the interesting questions raised was regarding how Property Managers should plan for a volatile market considering fluctuations in market pricing for fuel and asphalt products.
Ryan explained, “The price of asphalt paving products isn’t directly correlated to the price of gasoline but there is a strong relationship between the two. As the price of gasoline has steadily risen during the last 4 months, asphalt cement has followed in suit. There is a lot of exciting things happening at the Rabine Group. Three companies that are part of the Rabine Group, Rabine Paving America, Roofing Solutions America, and UltraLot are attending and exhibiting at the Professional Retail Store Maintenance (PRSM) Show in Nashville, TN. The show is running currently having started on April 3 and running through the end of today, April 5.
So far the exhibition has been going very well and has provided a great opportunity to further develop the relationships between the attendees and our companies.

Silver Spring, MD -- The Ready Mixed Concrete (RMC) Research & Education Foundation is proud to announce the release of the latest addition to its extensive pervious concrete library of offerings: Performance Evaluation of In-Service Pervious Concrete Pavements in Cold Weather. The research, completed at the University of Minnesota, was performed in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Transportation and their Pavement Testing Facility. It includes a comprehensive evaluation of the use of pervious concrete in cold weather and examined such issues as impermeability causes, mix design, a rheological study and a pavement structural analysis. The researchers reviewed previous pervious concrete studies and also made recommendations for future areas of research on the topic.
"Pervious concrete pavements continue to grow in popularity not only for their tremendous stormwater management properties, but the numerous other benefits such pavements offer," said Foundation Chairman Scott W. Parson, President of Oldcastle Materials Mountain West Division. WATERLOO, Iowa --- City leaders are trying to determine whether asphalt or concrete provides the most bang for their street paving bucks.
Mayor Buck Clark has organized a series of City Council work sessions this month to gather information on both options and determine which material should be used for the roughly $4 million in street reconstruction projects the city awards annually with local option sales tax revenue.
"I was trying to get this done when I was (a councilman) because I never quite understood why we never get bids from concrete contractors," Clark said. "I want to confirm that what we are doing in Waterloo in reconstructing our streets was the right thing."

MANSFIELD -- Community leader and philanthropist Richard R. "Dick" Stander Sr., 92, died Feb. 4 at a Florida hospital.
He died after a short illness.
Stander was among the founders of The Ohio State University-Mansfield. He and his father, Carl, donated land for part of the campus, now shared with North Central State College. In recent years, he donated more than 30 wooded acres for academic purposes, including an ecology research site. The local OSU-Mansfield campus named Stander Plaza for him.
Stander earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from The Ohio State University in 1940.
In 2005, Stander received the university's Distinguished Service Award at summer commencement.
John Riedl, a former dean and director of OSU-Mansfield, said Stander was a key supporter of the local campus.
"He was delighted to learn we were starting the first year of the engineering program here, and he had toured the laboratory," he said. "He was very, very pleased that was happening."
